Amsterdam was an important trade city, but would eventually be outflanked by London. That did not happen without a fight, but the hostilities between England and the Dutch Republic were first and foremost a political matter. The English love for Dutch paintings barely suffered from it. Dutch masters like Pieter van Roestraeten and Godfried Schalcken made a career in London and Gerard ter Borch was also well able to sell his art there.
