London

The Queens Gallery

Amsterdam was an important trade city, but would eventually be outflanked by London. That did not happen without a fight, but the hostilities between England and the Dutch Republic were first and foremost a political matter. The English love for Dutch paintings barely suffered from it. Dutch masters like Pieter van Roestraeten and Godfried Schalcken made a career in London and Gerard ter Borch was also well able to sell his art there. No wonder you can find especially fine genre art in London museums like The Queens Gallery
