Museum De Lakenhal

The name of museum De Lakenhal in Leiden takes you back to the glory days of Leiden as a textile city. (Laken is Dutch for bed sheet) This city’s welfare came from the mighty sheet industry; Leiden was one of the biggest and most international cities of the Dutch Republic. In those days Leiden was also a very important centre for art. The fine painter Gerard Dou laid the groundwork for the Leiden school and Frans van Mieris and Jan Steen went arm in arm from pub to pub here. Naturally, along with so much more, you can find this Leiden art inside museum De Lakenhal.
